Thanks Curt I talked to a friend from that area and he was there on Sunday, 19 Feb and he said they were doing okay. He said Herring was working well on tip-ups and they were even catching them in a foot of water and they were the only ones on the lake. He said they cut a couple open and they were full of Minnows, but still had good luck he mentioned that the ice was at least 30 inches where they were fishing, but noticed water in the tire tracks when leaving. My friend and my family plan on going this weekend if everything goes okay I know I won't be telling anybody so we can have some luck again.

RON, the way to get there is to take hwy 2 west about two miles west of michigan to 114th ave NE then travel four or five miles or so north and you'll see it to the west (left). have been fishing there for some years now. i like in california but i am comming up on tuesday to get some fishing in. The Northerns usual bite herring usualy best on tip-ups in shollow water. three to six feet. but like i sayed i havn't been there for some time and you won't get much out of anyone after the 2000-2001 ice fishing season when everyone came from a thousand miles to fish the lake. surprised there are any fish left. i don't know what the roads are like but after this cold spell that whent through the ice shoulg be good. i always bring some rope and ice picks. better same than sorry. Good luck to you and mybe i'll see you out there if DL isn't bitting.

How does one get to the Lake Laretta? I have herd the fish have been biting and haven't had any luck at other places and my 2 sons are getting impatient not catching anything worth while this year.

Can one get close enough to walk to the lake since I don't have a truck? What are the Northerns biting on?

Very little ice on Laretta as of yet. Tried to walk out on one of the back bays but fell through immediately. Lucky it was only a couple of feet deep. I did catch four nice pike on Monday (in the wind) soaking spam beneath a pitchfork bobber. Those things a great! They will be more popular than the Vexilar for ice fishing!!!

Bucktamer & Restless,

Have you guys really been catching fish on Laretta? I've been out there 3-4 times this year and haven't had any action. I've been looking for the areas that you speak of but can't seem to locate any of them. My grocery store doesn't sell the kind of shrimp that those pike prefer. The ice should be thick enough now that I don't need to belly-crawl out there....I ended up with raw skin all over my belly! I did see talk to one guy who has had good luck jigging pixie spoons near the stump lake inlet, I guess that's the best report that I can share.

Good Luck!

The ice is a big GO! Good to finally get out there again and hammer the pike. Did just that on Saturday with the largest being a 12lb. Shrimp were the ticket.

I couldn't wait any longer either. Went out this morning and tried to get out there. Bucktamer, I saw where you went through and actually used that spot(it was a little less work for my hand auger) to fish! I thought these cold temps would build a little more ice for me. I felt kinda silly fishing from my stomach, but I wanted to disperse my weight as best as possible. I also had a wet suit on(just in case). Lost one at the hole, couldn't set the hook like I wanted too. I think I will be able to get my permanent out here next weekend, and then the real fun will begin!!

Was out last weekend and fell through the ----ice. Just had to check things out; and it won't be long until we are hammering the pike again. Successful deer season around my woods this year. Tons of nice bucks seen. I like fishing for the pike on ultralights but will set up several tip-ups. Are there any tips on keeping the ciscos better. I have use stingers and the pike will just tear these apart. This year i'm guessing there will be alot of fish 10+.

Fishing soon.

Slamming the Jumbo's on the north end of the lake. There must be one small school left in the lake, it's not easy to track them down....but once you find them, you can fill a pail in a hurry. Stumpguide, I have used smashed ciscos for chummin'; it seems to work better in the spring of the year for whatever reason. The fishing has been great for pike this winter, remember to wear gloves though, ripped my index finger about off setting the line on a 12#er earlier this wk.

Good Fishing!

I don't think that there's much left in Lake Laretta, the Game and Fish haven't stocked it for several years. With the pressure that it's seen in the past, it may be nearly fished out.

I have tried to spear on Laretta. It can be done, but for me the water just didn't have enough clarity. Even in shallow water you could only see the bottom if you sprinkled crushed egg shells in the hole. You are really going to have to pay attention to spear a pike out of that lake.

Can't wait for the waterfowl season to end so I can skip out onto the ice. Was out last night to scout for likely spots for first ice. Sounds like the warming trend next week could put us on hold for a little while. Saw several Pike finning in the shallows near the boat landing....they must have been feeding on something near the surface?

Hillbillie,

I have heard that you are one of the most accomplished pike fishers in the region, and that your favorite bait at Laretta in the summer is HOTDOGS! Are you trying to keep all of those slick Willy's to your self or what? I suggest that we organize a pike tournament before the lake closes for the waterfowl season. Let me know.

Donny- the pike tend to be less productive with the hotdogs in the summer for some reason. i personally have caught quite a few on the shrimp combo like ice fishing also ciscos and smelt still working; i have caught some nice ones recently onthe south end.
