Fishing was great this past week for walleyes. We were working weedlines and in about 7-9ft of water. They really get active before dark and there were some very nice sized eyes as well. Ice is good, but you want to be very careful where you go. A truck went in near the casino (5ft of water). ATV's might be a safer bet. Good Luck

Fishing was incredible. Fished with Devils Lake Guide and Outfitter "Steve Bourcy and Tavis." Have fished with them two times and will use them everytime I come up. Got lots of jumbo perch and a few walleye. I am coming back up in March and bring a few friends. I believe that they are by far the best guide service on the lake. They put you on fish and keep you on fish. They are a first class operation and have recommended them to many friends and business partners.

Devil's lake is great for catching big walleye and northern pike through the ice. Yes, the perch fishing has been very slow the last few years, but I would not go as far as saying DL fishing is horrible. Anytime you fish, especially through the ice, you are going to have days were you just cannot find what they want to bite. I highly reccomend you reconsider and give DL another chance. This time shoot for walleye.

Fished Military point and found fish all over the place, finally settled on an area where I was marking a solid 1-2 feet of fish that acted like they were active (would follow my jig, give red marks, etc..) but I only managed one.

Afternoon I set up on North 6 mile in 10 feet of water and hammered the walleye - 11 of them, 6 between 2 and 3 pounds. Lure of choice was a perch colored chubby darter with a minnow head on the bottom trebble.

just got back. perch fishing was ok for some early in the week. in the bay just east of 6 mile i thin clay. well we fished tiger and caught some huge perch 5 a day. and a ton of northerns, biggest being 38 inches, also alot of eyes in there. as far as guides go what a joke we dident use any ive been here a ton of times but as far as jeff dosh goes what a joke. he drives a 4 door black cheavy and will cry up a storm if your any wheres near his lake. we were out an hour before anyone showed up he pulls up and starts bitching what a joke. but the perch they caught were 8-10 inchers, not jumbos, and the walleyes were aroun 12-14inches on average.

Devil's Lake is NOT GOOD for perch fishing. We hired 6 guides for our trip last Feb and got ONE perch. Most of the guides mentioned that people stopped coming because the perch were slow for years. Wish I would have known this. It would have saved me 2 days of train travel and 2 days of the worst fishing of my life

August 18,2006, bout 7:00pm 1st stop on highway 19 just past the dike, me and my cousin hit 19 fish total, 1 walleye and 18 white bass, all catch and release. We fished until the mosquitoes started swarming us, used homemade spoon lures, they seemed to like a silver green spoon color about 1 to 2 feet from the bottom in about 12 foot depths with minnows from ED's bait shop. Keep on Fishing. :)

I talked my buddy into hiring the perch patrol for 3 days - Feb 13,14,15. He won't go anywhere with me anymore. We cut the trip short; the perch fishing was that bad. Total take for 2 people under the direction of 5 or 6 guides - 1 walleye and 1 perch (the perch patrol guys caught about 15 perch in the two days between the 5 or 6 of them). The guides were very nice, but the perch fishing was the worst in my life. We went to Winni last year and got our limit of 20 each for 2 days. At Devil's Lake, I brought my vs 460 camera along and didn't see one perch on the screen. The story I got is that the perch fishing has been bad for awhile there. Had I known this, I never would have gone. Cost me $750 a fish and 26 hours on a train.

Anyone going to Devil's Lake----Here's my report.

There was four of us we just got back. The resortand owner was great. Woodland Resort and we would recomend it highly. We were there for three days,we fished from dark to dark. Catch 8 walleyes out of four guys. Talked to some guys from Ills. and asked them where the pearch were---they just laughed and said there are none any more. So go at your own risk--you'ved been warned. It sure wasn't worth the six hr. drive. Guess we'll stay in MN. and fish. If you go---GOOD LUCK--- you'll need it.

Dan,

I was up there as well and the fishing you talked about was pretty much how it was. The weather front that moved through Saturday really slowed things down. We ended up with 1 walleye and maybe 10 Pike on smelt. We fished pike on lake Irvin and to only get 10 in two days is really really slow.

Fishing will pick up after the weather settles down.

My dad and I went up this past weekend and fished Saturday night, Sunday morning, and Sunday night. We were with Woodland restort. Unfortunately, we didn't get a single nibble, we switched house about 3-4 times. We tried walleyes, and then tip-ups w/ herring for northerns, but nothing seemed to work. But we heard nothing being caught anywhere else. The people at Woodland were really nice and it was still a fun trip.

GOT A BUNCH OF NIBBLES RIGHT OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MAIN LAKE 1/9/06. THE ONLY THING I PULLED THROUGH THE ICE THOUGH WAS A PINK 44D BRA. LOOKED LIKE IT MAY HAVE BEEN LOST LAST SUMMER. THERE IS A NAME ON IT IF ANYONE CAN FIND THE OWNER.

MY GUESS IS THE PERCH WERE HEAVILY FISHED OUT. AND LIGHTLY REPLACED. PLUS THE NORTHERN AND WALLEYE ARE DOING SO GOOD THEY ARE PROBABLY EATING THE PERCH RIGHT UP.

SHOULD BE SOME CORRECT INFORMATION IN THE NORTH DAKOTA OUTDOORS MAGAZINE. SHOULD ALSO CHECK THE discovernd.com/gnf/ WEBSITE. E-mail: ndgf@state.nd.us Information: 701 328 6300

DON'T FORGET TO GET YOUR NORTH DAKOTA OUTDOORS CALENDAR. GOTTA LOVE THE SUNRISE AND SUNSET TIMES FOR EACH DAY. MOON PHASES. ALL THE HUNTING SEASON OPENING DATES. AND OF COURSE ALL THE HOLIDAYS. THERE ARE SOME COOL PICTURES OF NORTH DAKOTA WILDLIFE AND OUTDOORS FOR EACH MONTH. THE BEAUTIFUL SKUNK EVEN MADE THE CUT I THINK IT WAS LAST YEAR FOR A MONTH. THERE IS A REAL NICE BEAVER IN THIS YEARS ISSUE.

Well the "master angler" (me) headed out tonight to try to find some slab eyes. Our group had no luck but my partner Dain Netland pulled through the ice a 12" jumbo perch. It's always fun to share these experiences with close friends and even those who are more than friends like my partner Dain. I didn't even have to call to send him flowers like Cody did his girlfriend, my love what right there with me....Anyway we're all heading out tomorrow to try the waters of Minnesota before we make our way back to Ioway. The fishing has really been slow, ive found time to send my girlfreind flowers and play with a couple dogs. I caught a nice 12 incher but thats about all that has happened. my freind ryan martin "master angler" caught a 30 inch 10lb northern on rod and reel on 4lb test. Dain Netland angled a large walleye hanging at 14 feet in 23 foot water by the dome house. The other three fellas on the trip have been skunked but they have eaten really well. We will catch more walleye at the all you can eat buffet at the casino on thursday than we will our entire trip here. Night fishing has really sucked too didn't even mark a fish. total fish count for 2days; 3 walleye 1 very large northern, 1 perch. don't come up here until the fishing turns better, were about to head to minnesota to limit out in the morning.

The only fish Ive got from shore in 15+yrs,is evrything but WhiteBass! But from the boat,if I was goin after those fightin rascals, the first crankbait Id put on would be a ThinFin.In Blue&Silver or Chartruse&Silver.5ft from shore or less does the trick everytime,so ya gotta have a tight line and be ready.Have fun and GoodLuck.

If you are after pike go to channel A .You can get there from devils lake city by going on highway two and following it till you see four grain silous on the left then take the next left. When you get there park on the road and walk left down the train tracks till you hit water then start fishing. Cut bait on the bottom works best.

Well went out and fished devils lake on monday and found that the pike fishing is really starting to heat up. Look for them in the shallow bays. I havent heard of anything about the shrimp doing that. I hope if they are that someone will do something.

There hasn't been much as far as discussion on Devil's lake fishing for a while. I will pass on that I was out a short while ago and found the ice to be somewhat unsafe. I'm sure if I had been able to find some ice I would have "hammered them" however. On another note, is it true the large freshwater shrimp that frequent Devils Lake in high numbers eat perch eggs? Has there been any work by the fish and game to determine what exactly is going on?

just got back from devils lake 3/21 and pike fishing is exellent right now,the walleye i dont know we fished the casino bridge twice without a hit and a couple of other spots we had caught fish in the past just could not find them.we did see people with eyes but everyone of them were local,30" plus of ice you can drive just about anywhere but be careful of bridge areas. no perch to speak of,best advise i could give is to walleye fish mornings and evenings and pike fish during the day.......

good luck. greg

You can use live minnows on Devils Lake, and it is not a dead sea. I have been up there 4 times this winter and limited out on walleyes every time. The last time I went I also caught 12 perch. Not to mention all the pike action. Ice pro try venturing off the beaton path, so many people go directly to where everyone else is fishing, try known areas of interest around the flats and dropoffs by bridges (watch the ice), you know the fish are there in spring and will be moving up soon.

Ive fished it about 5 times this year and have had 2 really good days other wise I just got a couple. try a warmer day with the sun shining but not to hot. Fish about 6 inches off the bottom with crappie minnows. I think next year the fishing will suck because Hobart is getting over fished. If you got any tips send 'em my way.

The ice may not be very good by the end of March, but there should be good fishing by the bridges,as there will be open water there. We caught some walleyes and northerns last year. Bring along the rods for open water fishing. Can use smelt or golden shiners(dead) for northerns. Or other spoons, spinners etc. Could try small jigs and minnow for walleyes. Good luck. We are still trying to get to DL sometime this winter, though might not be until late March or early April.

Drove 1100 miles round trip to Devils Lake. three people fishing two days equaled zero perch. Fishing was the worst the locals had scene in years. Maybe I'm not the greatest fisherman, but the Vexilar was showing zero fish also, so at least I have proof that the fish were hard to find. The pro's from the resort were having the same luck as us. I made reservations a month or two back so I was on the hook for the trip weather I went or not. I took the chance. But like they say. A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work. I didn't know it would THAT bad.

But on a more positive note, I stayed at Woodland Resort on Devils Lake.(WWW.woodlandresort.com). If you are planning a trip, summer or winter, check them out. The have cabins, a small, motel and camping space , sports shop, resturant, and freindly staff. We stayed in the motel. Nothing fancy, but it was clean and warm and very afforable. The fishing package was also a good deal. (no, they don't guarentee fish, but it was still fun.) Email me if you'd like more info.

A friend and myself are coming out to Devil's Lake in late February to fish perch. We have never fished Devil's before and we are looking for a friendly person(s) to give us some information.

-Good areas to fish? -Best baits/lures? -Good hotels/lodges with access to the lake via ATV's

We would like to get to know a few people there and possibly make this a yearly tradition.

Email me at jlutzow@wi.rr.com

Thank you.

Fished the trees about 200 yards out from the mave bridge towards the big lake in about 13 feet of water surrounded by trees, lots of small walleyes but got a bonus 5 nice jumbo perch. got enough walleyes right around 15 to 18 inches. some on jigging and some on minnows

Just replying to Joe on the lighting for your ice shack. If you go to www.reedssports.com and look in the ice fishing area under ice shelter accessories, they sell rope lights you can attach to the roof of your fish shack that run off a 12 volt battery. They are great for night fishing. Be out there around the 2nd week of Feb. fishing, any info around then would be great. Thanks

I never had much faith in Eds baitshop reports. I do better finding the fish myself. I go away from the crowds. Eds usually gives you the popular places to fish. I guess for a person who never fished DL before it's a place to start.

I tried 6 mile near the bridge today and nothing was hitting-I gotta start listening to the guys at Ed's Baitshop. At about 3 pm I tried larimore dam... Nada on minnows or waxxies. O yah.. I got a 5600 clam today and a Mr. Buddy Heater. wow did I freeze! The clam was nice and everything..setup took a while since the manual pics were wrong ( we guys don't actually read these things first.. Pics first, then look at the print if all doesn't go well) I got the Mr buddy after a bad experience with a Sunflower heater last year-I had a headache for 2 days. Do the clams have enough ventillation for a sunflower to be run safely? Does anyone leave their clam houses on the ice like a permanant ice house or is that asking to get it stolen? I need some good portable lighting for my house, any recommendations from u pros out there?

Thanks everyone and tight lines Joe Larimore ND

I was just wondering, if I were to go and rent a fish house at Devils Lake, would I have to drag it out to my spot or if someone would bring it out on a snowmobile or an ATV. If anyone has an answer to my question I would greatly appreciate it.

Fellow fisherman,

We are thinking about going up later on this week. Maybe the 29th or 30th. I am wondering what some good locations would be. Is six mile bay a good spot. We would be looking mainly for walleye, northern pike, and perch. Any suggestions on what is the hot bait or where is the hot spot would be helpful.

Ice conditions are improving on Devils Lake. This week temps are forecasted for the single digits and lows in the -10s. Perch fishing has been slow so far mostly because we have been waiting for good ice in the popular perch spots and there just hasnt been that many people going out yet. Walleye and pike fishing has been good to excellent the last two weeks. Most of the smaller bays have between 4-8" and by next week we should be able to venture around almost anywhere on ATV.
