River levels are dropping here in town are are just about at 41 feet right now. We should be able to get a boat on the water as soon as the levels hit the 25 foot mark. That is if we can get the city down to clean the ramp off. Will keep everyone posted as to when the ramps will open here in town.

Well, the water is just starting to show up on top of the ice and the ice looks to be getting softer by the day. Lets just hope for a good slow melt so we don't have to worry about major flooding in the vally.

I for one am dieing to get back on the river this summer. If last summer has any sign to how this summer is going to be watch out. I will do my best to let everyone know when the ramps are open here in Grand Forks. Until then stay dry.

Well the river is no where fishable with a boat this time of year but that doesn't get me thinking about this coming summer and the great outlook I have. Last summer was the one of the best years I had on record. This spring can only be better, why becasue the rule the past years ago withthe daily limit of only one cat over 24". I myself would like to see that rule changed again to no fish over 24". That would only help this great river and protect these fish even more. If any of you have any questions regarding the river and fishing please feel free to email or call me. Have a great 2010 and good fishing to all, and be safe.

The fall bite is in full swing and the kitties are building up for the long winter. Frogs are a good bet right now along with fresh cut sucker. The fall walleye bite will soon be here as well so be ready for that with small minows on a light jig.

The Cats are in the normal spring pattern, EAT EAT EAT. We were out Sat and landed 15 cats with only two being under 14 pounds and the largest topping the scale at 25 pounds. From the fifthteen we landed 5 were over 20 pounds. Fish are holding along current breaks and seem to be baiting best on fresh cut sucker.

River is at 40.91, This is going to be one of the longest spring I can remember. There is just so much water North that it is going to be sometime before the river is safe enough to get onto. I will keep you all posted on when that me be. If you looking for a safe height look somewhere around 24 to 26 feet and I myself will be itching to get fishing this spring.

Well with the lastest storm that just went through it might be a little bit longer before we can get on the river. They are saying there is a 50% chance on major flooding this spring in the Grand Forks area. This will not hurt the fishing at all, but it will only delay use getting on the river with safe water conditions. I'll will keep you all posted as to when the river is safe to operate on.

Fishing is still hot but you have to be able to move to find the active fish. Fish seem to be holding in deeper water close to or around snags. Cut sucker seem to be the bait of choice still but frogs could get hot anytime soon.

We fished the river very hard over that last five days and the time on the water proved itself. Catching fish ment you just had to keep moving and find the active fish. Didn't really have that much luck in the holes but the runs and cuts in the current along the flats seemed to spit out a few fish. Another place that held fish were the back sides of snags right along the current edge. This is where the active fish were. Our biggest over the weekend was a 27 lber, we also had a 21,22,25,26 lber to top that off. It was a great weekend on the river and I can't wait to hit it again. Talk about hitting it at the right time. We were filming a show for the sportsman channel and both guys caught their biggest channel ever.

Fish seemed to be a little tougher to find this weekend but we found them. We tried the runs and holes along with the snags without too much luck. We turned to the troughs and set up on the bank side setting our lines down into the bottom of the troughs in about 16 to 17 feet of water. The fish seemed to like goldeye better than the fresh cut sucker, so keep both handy. You never know what they will be taken on any given day.

Went out last night even with the tornado warnings caught a 17# and a couple of smaller ones in the 6-9# range. We are still using med. sucker minnows. The wind was really bad last night though and it was hard to set the anchors just right. The water temp was about 68F I think it has cooled off because of the 2" of rain we got this weekend. Still using 5oz weights because of the fast current. Fish Hard or Go Home!

Newbie, try fishing the edges between the fast water and the slow water. In the spring I like hitting the snags that are right up on the bank. Try fishing the back edges of these areas and the cats really don't have alot of energy right now. As the water warms the bite will only get better.

Made it out on the ice last weekend and enjoyed a great afternoon fishing. We ended the day with only one fish, a 5 to 6lb pike. The ice was any where from 10 to 18 inches thick. I'm sure that there are spots that still would not hold a person you caution is still needed when you go onto the river.

Ice is no longer an issue, we now have six plus inches! At this time the water clarity or lack thereof is presenting some major problems as far as the bite is concerned. Current visability is approximately eight inches and when the river is cloudy the walleye are extremely tough!!! Hopefully the conditions will soon clear up, I know there's a lot folks waiting to get out there! In the mean time I will focus my efforts out on Lake Winnipeg for 'eyes and big gators!

Good-Luck to all this winter!

Due to the weather, making safe ice has been an issue so far up here. Although 95% ice covered, she's not safe to venture out on yet. Providing the weather cooperates, we should be accessing by the end of the month. One area I checked yesterday had 2-1/2 inches of ice, but there's still a few area's that have open water.

Stay tuned.

Kent's right on the money. You can still catch a cat or two, but it's particularly hard to catch a big one now. You can see them stacked up in holes, or at least what I believe to be big cats in just about every hole on your finder. I mean hundreds and hundreds. Holes that were devoid of fish almost all summer are now just packed with big fish. It's an amazing thing to see, but the water temperature is hovering right around 40 degrees right now and the big cats are darn hard to get to take a bait. You can maybe entice a big one to bite once in a while if you lay it right in front of them, but you'll have to wait until next year for a good, consistent bite. In my experience, this time of the year is tough for cats.

Once the water temps hit 50 its going to start getting tough catching those kinds of cats. Look for snags in low current areas and use fresh sucker. Fish the edges of these and you might have some luck.

The fishing at Lockport on Saturday was fantastic! We caught over 50 saugers and a 23" green back all on jigs tipped with minnows.Friends caught a 26" green back on a pickeral rig. Big Catfish were also being caught on shrimp.

Sat out in the rain yesterday north of Grand Forks for about 4 hours and got 10 cats, the biggest at 16 lbs. All were caught on suckers and the fish were aggressive. I only anchored in one spot and didn't do any hunting for bigger fish, but I don't consider 10 out of one spot too bad. I've been finding them in deeper water using my depthfinder to locate fish and it's been working for me the last few times out. If they are holding shallow or not, I don't know. The fall bite doesn't seem to be what it was last fall when we were getting almost all big fish and no small fish, but the bite has been pretty good with some bigger fish mixed in including some 20 lb. plus fish now and then.

I too have been listening to all kinds of stupid comments about the water levels being low and that the "fall-run" is going to be tough....what a load of cr@p!!!

For starters, the river's in great shape, water levels are ever so slightly low, there's just the right amount of flo to attract tons of bait fish into the river. Yesterday, some guests from Ill. caught a few 'eyes. Their total for the day was a dozen nice eaters in the twenty inch range. They released one five, two six's, a nine plus and an eleven plus! So much for all the negativity!

My suggestion to anyone heading this way soon....."make sure your line is fresh and your hooks are exxxxxxxtra sharp"!

Wondering if the cats are still hitting on frogs and if they have turned on the feedbags yet? Looking to get out here this week to see if they bigguns are out and feeding.

Would like to know if frogs would be a good thing to have yet.

Thanks, Loren

Duke, it depends on if you have a MN or ND fishing lic. ND's record Freshwater Drum is 26lb-2oz. MN record is 35lb-3oz's. But nice catch anyway, I'm sure he gave you a good battle.

Local resort says fishing here has been excellent--catfish, walleye, sauger, northern are all biting. I can tell you there has been a large number of anglers in town for a good week or so.

The water temps have dropped significantly from earlier temps and now temps are about normal. As far as the tournament, I don't anticipate any more problems this year than in the past. Good Luck and see you in Forks!!

Do you guys think they will still hold the tournament? Do you think it will be to hard on the fish? I for one would hate to see a big fish kill after the tournament because it caused to much stress on the fish. My partner and I are supposed to fish the tournament but I would hate to see it hurt the fish in the river.

Michael,

There are many ways in which to catch sauger while shore fishing. One simple method is to fish a bottom rig and shinner combo. This can simly be a single hook, tipped with a salted shinner and using a sliding weight rig, cast it out and let it sit. The other methos, which is more demanding is to rig up a jig and tail combo. You fish this method by casting, let it sink to the bottom, than begin your retreive just off the bottom. When you feel the fish strike, set the hook! These methods can be applied to most species and will be effective on most waters!

People heading to Grand Forks need this warning. If your going to fish North of town be very careful. River level is getting to the point of not getting a boat to run safe. Reports of lower units and props are becoming the norm. Just today I heard a report of a boat grounding out in the middle of the river. Guy was standing in the water pulling his boat off standing in ankle deep water.

So if your going to fish the Grand Forks area, fish South there is plenty of water there.

Doug, I am sure you can rent a boat at Cats on The Red. They have a website if you do a search on them and can ask them directly. They seem to be really freindly people there.

Good Luck When you come up here.

I have a question...and I am (if I can that is) directing it at Stu from Cats on the Red. I know you know the fishing at Lockport quite well and I don't have a boat and I fish from shore. I usualy fish by your place and have had lots of luck with goldeyes.(I stopped by the office one time to ask permission to park in your lot and you were very nice about it...only asking we clean up our garbage when we leave..something I am very strict about doing and making my kids do as well) Anyways long question longer What would be the best technique for cathing sauger from shore? And the best spot? I have only caught two this year( I am kind of new to fishing) One was on a jig near the locks at the park by Lockport grocery and the other was with a crankbait at the same spot. Any advice on where when and with what would be greatly appreciated. michael_bard@hotmail.com

My target fish would be Saugers at this time of year and have caught a couple but not too many. Better luck with that later in the season like Sept October. Winter makes for great ice fishing for Norhtern Pike and Walleye. There are some of us here who do fish for Channel cats but I am not one of them. It makes me wonder sometimes....here we live so close to some of the best Catfishing in North America and most of us want Walleyes. I always fish at Cats on the Red. Park the truck head down to shore and fish in the evenings. May and early June is hot if you like Goldeyes. They are not a real fighting fish but they taste great smoked. Every time I go down there I see tons of trucks with plates representing so many U.S. states I can hardly believe it. I am glad though that you all enjoy coming here and hope you find us all to gracious hosts. If any of you feel like dropping me a line michael_bard@hotmail.com.

Fished South on Sunday and in the first four miles we counted between 20 and 25 dead catfish all over 13 pounds, with one pushing the 25 to 30 mark. Something is hurting these fish and I for one think it is the lower water levels and the water temps 85.7. If you are going to fish please pinch your barbs down. This will cause less harm to the fish and you can also return them to the water faster.

Nick, Nice fish. If I could just add one thing that maybe we should all be thinking about right now. The warm water temperatures may be stressing fish right now (possibly), although catfish in the southern U.S. typically thrive in water temperatures in the low 90s without any ill effects. I have seen water temperatures around that 85 degree mark this weekend. If the high water temperatures are stressing the fish alot may be the subject of debate, but even so, there have been reports of dead catfish floating in the river, although what I have seen seems nothing out of the ordinary. Still, there may be something to it. Let's not take for granted that they aren't stressed though. I know that a ten minute fight is fun, but keep in mind that the longer you fight a fish, the more stressed it becomes. A ten minute fight takes alot out of a fish and in my experience, it should only take a few minutes to get a fish of that size into the boat, unhooked and back into the water. Until we get rain in the Red River basin that raises the river level and lowers the temperature somewhat or even cooler weather, it may be a good idea to use heavier line that will allow you to get the fish in quickly and reduce the stress to a minimum. Also, when you get them into the boat, unhook them quickly and get them back in the water if you are releasing them. Just my thoughts.

Hi I was fishing the red north of the Kennedy bridge. And we were anchored. I was using a sucker minnow with the tail and head cut off. I had my cabelas muskie rod and reel combo. I casted my line out and waited and i had my clicker on to. About 30 minutes later the clicker was going crazy I waited for him to run for a while then I closed the bail then i reeled down and set the hook. And after the 10 min. fight i brought him in unhooked him an weighed him at 11lbs and 8oz and 29" channel cat. then 30 min. later I had a 4lbs sheephead.

The fishing at Lockport has been pretty slow past couple of days. My partner and I caught some huge Drum 24.5 + 25.5 + a 34.75 catfish. The cats don't seem to be as agressive. Should we be fishing closer to the locks? I haven't fished cats much, but now I'm really enjoying it.If anyone can give me tips on how to fish the big cats + where I should be looking, it would be greatly appreciated.

My son and I fished near Drayton July 1 and 2. Caught 12 cats 15 lb and over. Biggest was 18 lb 2 oz. Caught plenty of smaller cats on nightcrawlers but the only bait the big ones would take was cut goldeye. Chicken liver and shrimp only caught drum and yellow bullheads. Walleye fishing here has slowed down so we are going back to the Red in a few weeks.

Thing's are getting more and more interesting by the day. Yesterday afternoon we hammered some Sumu's in the vacinity of the dam! The bite was hot until some inconsiderate #@&%ing jerk decided it would be cool to drive his boat directly on top of where the kitties were feeding!!! The action should continue to heat up from here on!

See you soon.

On June 30th 06 my two boys and there Dad and a good friend of the family, asked if I wanted to go fishing down at the river, It was very hot in the 90'S I think? Anyway I wasn't sure if I wanted to be in the hot sun for that long, and I'm not a real great fisherman, don't get me wrong, I like fishing, but just have never been real good at it. well when we got there everybody was catching fish one after another, I was just getting robbed, lots of bites I just could never hook them, but the one I did get was the bigest, at first I thought I just snagged my line on something, but then I could feel something tugging thats when I really fighting to get it into shore, I was even laying down on the rocks of the bank trying to reel it in, and yell for help, and when I got it to the edge of the water, my family pulled it up on the bank!! It was a huge catfish, it was 32" and weighed 12lbs. I couldn't believe that I caught that, neither could my boys.

We were up there the first week of June and it was pretty slow. Had to work for every fish. Water temps were way above normal for that time of year. I belive the cats were in the middle of the spawning process.

Well I was out yesterday afternoon for a few hours and found the fish to be somewhat on the non-aggressive side. Had fish activity in most spots I tried but just getting them to commit was another story. A few smaller fish - 3lbs and under but one nice 33"er that made the day.

Aaron-what stretch have you guys been working? I have been hitting the southern stretch as it is close to home. But have heard of bigger fish coming from the northern end of town.

John, that's a great fish for your daughter! I would say a walleye that size should be around that 8-10lb mark depending on time of year. Post spawn might be a bit lighter but should be a decent estimate.

Jeremiah, what areas have you been fishing? I have mainly been fishing the southern stretch but did try north earlier in the year. I am always looking for a fishing partner if you are looking to get out, I have a boat ready to go if you wish. I went out twice this week with the biggest being around 10lbs and a few others in that small category like yourself. Hoping to get out tomorrow again and have some better luck, hopefully this rain quits by then!

I've only been out twice so far, last saturday and yesterday, but I have managed to catch 8 small cats (2-5 lbs) and two larger cats (12 & 15 lbs). I also managed to lose a big (30-36") one while trying to pull it from the water. I haven't had this much fun fishing in years.

At Grand Forks there is only one dam. You can go all the way up to Drayton or all the way down to Fargo, depending uponing which side of the dam you launch at. Depth is really not a key factor at all from my experience either and it's a more relative thing on the river. What may be deep in one part of the river may not be deep in another. It depends on alot of things as to where they will be a particular day or even where they will be any particullar time of the day. Flow, time of season, water temperature, weather fronts, sunlight (clear vs. cloudy), shade and possibly even the wind to some extent all play a part as to where the fish will be. Let the fish tell you where they are and once you find some, look for similar spots. The best advice I can give you is put in your time searching. I've found big fish in 3 feet of water by a tree and moved on to the next place and caught a big one in 25 feet of water in a hole. I've also caught fish on the inside of a snag that may only be a couple of feet deep and been catching them on the outside of the snag that drops into 25 feet of water at the same time. I agree with Scott. Don't get hung up on depth. Fish the structure, whatever it may be and you'll eventually find fish. You may move from spot to spot all day and almost give up and then the next spot you stop at will produce a double for you. Let the fish tell you where they'll be and have patience. Jumping from snag to snag has been extremely effective for me so far this year and as a general rule, look for snags with fairly fast access to deeper water. They generally hold larger fish. There aren't any sure bets on any given day to where the fish will be, but if you hit enough snags in a day, you'll come across some fish.

Aaron, I've fished the river very little this year, but Grand Forks area is quite good.

I've never known that depth was a "key" issue. (Meaning that you can catch them in 1 foot of water to 50 feet of water.

Structure, holes and anything that causes a current break is where you want to look.

Yes, morning is good, later evening is best (I've heard it peaks around 4 AM or so.)

Scott, the only way I can use a treble hook to make it legal is to add a small spinner blade to make it a lure. But to use a single hook as a stinger I beleive it is legal. Look at a crawler harness. Never mind, they also have a small spinner on them. I guess I answered my own question. I showed my step dad my pictures and he and his dad want to go soon. How much river is there in grand forks to fish out of a boat between dams? When fishing the Red what is the best sructure to look for, ie.. dead falls, log jams....? In Fargo I'm almost fishing in the middle of the river on an open stretch in 14-16 ft of water. Catching fish in the morning and around noon it goes dead. Any comments or links would be appreciated.

Aaron:

If you are using a single hook and are licensed in Minnesota, then I'm 99% sureit is illegal for you to add a stinger or even fish with a treble hook.

From the Minnesota DNR:

Anglers may use only one hook. An artificial lure is considered one hook. A treble hook, when not part of an artificial lure, is considered three hooks and is not legal. The exception is three artificial flies may be used when angling for trout, crappie, sunfish, and rock bass.

I don't believe the same is true for North Dakota, but you are expected to follow the rules of the state you are licensed in.

Now, if you have a license for BOTH states, I imagine it's "ok", but you might want to check into this further.

Stick Man, We fished the Lockport area on June 2nd. Fishing was slower than in past trips. Seven cats caught between two of us all day. One was large, 30-35 lb., looked like it swallowed a soccer ball. We watched some people fishing from the bank catching countless numbers of drum. That was interesting. We had fun and will return. I found this blurb from google.

"Bismark Lake

HWY U, Grider Rd., Lakeview Road.

Three trails are old forest roads and lakeside area, on 1,188 acres and the 210 acre Bismark Lake. Near Buford Mountain but not connected to the trail. The lake was formed by the headwaters of the St. Francois River. The lake is good sized for canoing and scenic viewing. "

Hope it helps. I also found this local forum that maybe a better place to find information on Bismark Lake.

Fish the shore line anywhere near the North boat landing. People have been catching fish along the shores. As far as walleyes go, going to have to wait until fall and fish the shore line in the same area. Fishing for eyes in the Grand FOrks area is really a hit or miss thing. Fishing the Red Lake river would give you a better shot at catching eyes from shore. Hope this helps you out. Kent

Steve, try using fresh suckers about 6 inches long, cut in half and use the head on a slip sinker rig. You can also try catch some goldeyes using worms about 12" below a bobber and casting is the slack water behind snags. Try cutting this up as well and using a cutbait. We have had good luck with both and this might help you out. Good Luck

Well if you have hunted, lets hope you hunted for the meat and not for the furs, feathers, fins or horns. Personally, I enjoy hunting and occasionally hunt fish as well as deer. Now I am out there for the meat to feed my family. I will one day teach my son to do the same because that is the way it has been before you and I, generation before generation hundreds of years beyond. Your decisions to fish as sport are respected as long as disrespect is not issued to those who decide to fish for food. This time of year if a cat with a swelled belly is caught, I will release it due to suspicion of pregnacy. Otherwise, yes I will grill a cat and enjoy the smiles on the faces of those who eat it also.

Redneck, Although I enjoy hunting, I quit hunting game years ago and now I just hunt catfish and an occasional walleye and it's very rare that I don't release everything. I definitely release all catfish, not because I don't like to eat them, but because they are too much of a wonderful and precious creature to kill in my opinion.

It's about understanding nature, appreciating the wonderful opportunities that we have to interact with it, and not trying to destroy what we have. redneck, rour comment is uninformed, not funny, and particularly stupid regarding our neighbors to the North. If you're trying to be a comedian, keep your day job.

Kent, what type of structure have you been fishing lately? Finding fish in snab piles, deeper holes, what? I had Cody and Logan out last weekend for a quick afternoon trip and we had a blast. Never did manage a good cat, but caught plenty of smaller channels, some stone cats, sheephead, and a 22" eye- which kept 'em plenty busy. Cody pumped his fist for 15 minutes after the walleye- pretty funny and fun.

All three ramps are open in Grand Forks and the fishing has been slow to great. Many big fish are being caught photoed and released back into the river. Lets keep the practice going to help keep this river great.

Was out Tuesday night for a couple of hours with a good friend and it took awhile to find the fish but it was worth the wait. Fished for 2 to 2 1/2 hours and caught four fish, a 16lb, 15lb, and two 9's. Once the river gets back within its banks it should only improve.

Bob A Stu is running like a mad man these days tring to get the place up and running or Sat. The docks are not in at this time but there is still NO problem launching as about 10' of the ramp is showing. The doors are not in the locks and probable will not be in until mid june but the floodway is really down and almost to nothing. There are lots of places to fish and if U use 6oz U will probably come home with sore arms from fighting the kitties. I know I will be out there.

Frogs are a great bait. I like to use them towards later summer when the frogs start moving. You will know this when you start seeing dead frogs on the roads. I like fresh frogs and have even had good luck on frogs that have been dead a few days and frozen and reused. Give it a try but also have other bait since any bait is a hit or miss. Good Luck

I hear a lot of people using frogs, I've heard live, dead, smashed, and even leggless. How do most of you fish them? I grew up fishing cats on the Mississippi but never have used frogs.

If this summer is anything like last summer, you had better be ready. On one trip we landed 14 cats over 15 lbs with the biggest around 22. The next day we fished the same spot and landed a 28lber. Just can't wait to see how this summer pans out. Should be a good one with all the high water up North.

Depending on water temps Catfish spawn sometime around mid June to early July. It could be sooner or later but it really depends on the weather we have had and the water temps.

The farther North you go the bigger the cats go. You can catch big cats South of Fargo but they are not as common as downstream. You will have to wait until the water gets back within its banks before you give it a try. May should be great this summer. Hope this helps you out some.

That all depends on the spring melt. May can be a great time to fish with the water warming up. Throw the stink bait out and go with a fresh cutbait in the spring. Cats in the spring are looking for something fresh. Hope that helps you out.

Was wanting to know when the cats start biting on the Red near Drayton? Last year I fished it for the 1st time (in August), caught some nice fish under the bridge. I moved to ND from St Louis 2 years ago didn't have to worry about ice down there. When do the cats start biting here. Normally I use stink bait. Can't wait til it warms up. I wish the river was a bit closer than Bottineau.

The Coast Gaurd has no maps for the Red River. Even though its a Federal waterway they won't make charts due how this river changes. The best way to learn the river is just to get on it and drive with your depth finder on. Read the river it will tell you alot about whats underneath. Best of luck.

John, I've found two places that will give you what you are looking for. I was recently introduced to Google Earth. Go to Google and type in Google Earth and it'll direct you from there. You'll have to download a program but the sight is COOL and it's really easy to use. It'll show all the bends on the Red River. It appears to be a combination of aerial and satellite images beacuse while looking at it, the resolution is better up at E. Grand Forks/Grand Forks than at Wahpeton/Breckenridge, but you can definitely see the bends easy enough. Another great sight is at http://terraserver.microsoft.com/. This sight is all aerial images and the resolution is so good you can pick out individual buildings and see shadows from structures, something you can only do in some places with Google Earth. A bit slower and clunkier to use than Google Earth, but aerial images thorughout and thus better resolution. No downloads needed either. Go on the sight, type in the name of the town and it takes you there. You can even print images with a little experimentation and piece them together to make hardcopies. Both sights are pretty amazing. Good Luck. Hope this helps.

Tuesday night the Red River Hookers had our January meeting. We discussed a few items at hand.

1. Hookers shirts are selling well. We need to order more XL (Motion Carried)

2. We have been planning an Intro to Catfishing class to help get adults that are new to catfishing started. After some discussion Marty Egeland from ND Game and Fish stated that we could do it at a seminar series he is working on. (tabled for further discussion with Marty)

3. Discussed getting Terry Steinwand-Director of ND Game and Fish to come to a future meeting to talk about river issues. (Motion carried. We will ask to have him in late spring or early summer.)

4. Requested that the Hookers write a letter of support for snowmobiles in the greenway. After lengthy discussion no conclusion reached. (Tabled for further information)

For more information on how you can join the Red River Hookers please email Brad Durick at brad@whyfishradio.com or Karry Kyllo at kpkyllo@yahoo.com

John, Tell me exactly what kind of map you are looking for and I'll give you some ideas. Keep in mind that water levels and bottom structure constantly changes so that contour maps or anything like you'd expect on a lake are not possible on the Red or any other river. I can direct you to some sites to free get satellite or aerial images of the Red River if that will work for you if you'd be interested.

If you want to talk Red River fishing and want to pick up pointers from some of the hard core fisherman on the Red River, learn more about outdoor issues that may affect the Red from an outdoor writer that is really in the know, have some Red River concerns or issues that you think need addressing or just want to get to get involved with a bunch of folks that have the common goals and interests of trying to do something positive for the Red River, please join us. I'm guessing its going to be about the same battle we had with the boat ramps. Some people just don't like the noise and they think that they tear up the grass. Well I for one don't drive them on the grass they seem to work better where there some snow won't you say Scott. Anyway, one of the battles you'll have is from the skiers. They don't like snowcats going over the groomed trails. This I would think would be the biggest challange.

Scott, I have an excellent memory althouogh it's short, but if I recall, there were some pretty lengthy discussions about snowmobiles on the Greenway at several city council meetings earlier in the year. I'm not a snowmobiler and I didn't pay that much attention to it at the time, but perhaps if you do some research, you can find was was discussed. Personnally, I don't know why anyone would have a problem with snowmobiles on the Greenway, but evidently someone does and they must have some political clout. The Greenway seems like the logical place to snowmobile to me, and people that have snowmobiles are as much taxpayers as ones that aren't snowmobile owners. I don't see noise being an issue either because of the dike separating residences from snowmobiles. Look at the city council records Scott and perhaps you can find more as to why. Have a Great 2006.

Kent and Scoot,

I took your advice and bought a new Vexilar FL-18 ultra pack not just for catfish but for all fish and lakes. After a couple days of no catfish on the Red, I was loosing hope. But last weekend I managed to pull a 6 pounder out on a crawdad. Its not a huge fish but it is a catfish! I had other bites in the same hole I was fishihng but didn't manage to bring any other fish out of the water.

Mike
