Beau,

We were ALL either walleye or northern pike fishermen before we got hooked on Catfishing. Give it time my friend.

Gentlemen, I am new to the area I go to UND. I am not a catfish person. I know I am sorry to say that but I love to catch Northen Pike. Could anyone tell me if the Red is good for Pike or do I have to drive to Devils Lake. Second, where should I fish in the Red if there are Northerns to be had? THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP IN THIS MATTER.

Jeff,

If you are going to fish from shore the easiest way to get to the north dam is to head north from Gateway Drive on Mill Road, turn right at the Greenberg Roofing sign and you will be able to find your way from there.

If you are going to be in a boat the north landing is further north than above on Mill Road, take a right at the junk yard (on your left) and follow the gravel road to the landing. I am unsure if the turn to the landing is marked or not. I hope this helps you somewhat.

Brent, as far as fishing for cats on the Red River, they haven't really started baiting yet. It improves as the summer goes on. If I had to chose a date on what I know and what the weather is like I would say late June to mid Aug. As for locations, take you pick there are two boats ramps in Grand Forks you could use either one with good luck, moving north down stream to Drayton I have never fished there but have heard good reports all last summer. even up to Pembina the fishing is good. If you are planning on fishing from the banks only you are missing quit alot. Bring a boat if possible, it doesn't take a large boat on this river. I have seen people with 12' boats and little 5hp moters . As for bait take you pick, peoples use everything from squid to night crawlers, I like to use fresh cut bait, either suckers or goldeyes. Liver and other things work also but the largers fish I beleive are on cut bait. Hope this helps you out. Remember the little fish are better eating help save this great fishing river by releaseing the cats over 24" Thanks

A couple of buddys and I are trying to plan a fishing trip. We have heard the Red River is about the best cat fishing around. I read the reports below and wonder if we would have any luck there. how are the cats biteing this year? Which side of the river would be best to fish, ND or MN? Where would be some good spots to go when we get there? What kind of bait would you suggest useing? And any thing else you would like to include to help us out would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.

Checked out the locks at Lockport today. The Red is the lowest I can ever remember it. They have already put in the locks and north of the locks the shelf on the east side is completely dry. Last year where I anchored in 5 ' of water it is totally dry and there was still about 30' of dry land before any water. I heard, never checked, the ramp in Selkirk Park will not be useable if we do not get any raise in water. The season opens in 2 wks and Uall better send us some water quick.

I hope to take the boat out this week for a test ride so will check with the depth finder.

I've been fishing at the dam by Island Park (not sure what they call it). Some guys were going for walleyes, but all anybody on the ND side caught was "skipjacks", whatever those are. I've never heard of them. But on the MN side at the same dam, they were catching piles of fish. I couldn't see that good, but it looked like a few good-size cats.
