Dan, I myself would fish below the north damn. Get a ND fishing Lic. and you set. You can fish there just about anytime during the summer. Good luck.

I go to UND and have heard alot about the great catfishing in the Red. Is the fishing in Grand Forks any good, or do you have to go to Canada? Also if anyone wouldn't mind sharing a few good shore fishing spots I'd appreciate it.

Kent, I do freeze Goldeyes also. I use to only use them fresh, but have also started freezing them. They do get soft but I will steak them instead of filleting after freezing. Sometimes, I belive they will out produce fresh goldeyes. Not always though, I am a firm beliver in fresh bait.

It was nice talking to you yesterday, I wasn't trying too hard to catch those ugly green fish anyway. I was happy just to catch that bunch of suckers.

I hoped to see you again up that way, next time I will be fishing for cats.

Good Fishin!

Karl, The catfishing won't improve until the water temps start improving. But as far as fishing this time of year, the key areas are below the dams. There are two in town, but remember if you fish the one by the point bridge you will need to have a MN fishing lic. because the dam is considered inland waters. I have found that a three way set up with a floating jig works best tiped with a minnow. Good luck

I am new to catfishing in this area. Is the fishing in Grand Forks good yet this year or is it too cold still? Where in town is good to fish this time of year? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I visited the river banks by the dam Saturday evening for about an hour. Casted a few minnows to see if I could get a walleye to bite. I managed to catch a small eye.

I tried out a Weed Weasel jig from Northland for the first time. I have to say that after trying that out on the rocks I am really excited to use it in the trees at Devils. I only lost 2 in about 150 casts with a slow retrieve.

Well went out Sat for a couple of hours. Fished the current break with three ways and a floating jig head and minnow. Ended the evening with two walleyes one we had to put back he was 18 1/2" the other went to the pan. Also caught a couple of goldeyes and my first cat of the year about a 5lbs.

Sunday we also wet the line for awhile. Dennis it was nice chatting with you. After you left we ended up catching a few eyes, only to be able to bring one home. Never did catch any suckers but we didn't bring any worms with us. Dennis have you ever tried to freeze goldeyes. I'm thinking that they would get soft and not stay on the hook to well.

I spent the morning up in Grand Forks today. I had a friend that wanted to try his luck at walleyes. We did not catch any walleyes, but I filled my livewell with suckers. We were catching them with nightcrawlers laying on the bottom. I can hear you now, why in the world would anybody try to catch suckers? I put them in the freezer and when catfish bait is hard to catch, I will use these fish. They freeze well and make great bait to keep on hand.

Fun to fish the river up there again.

The Walleyes will only be at the dams for a few weeks in the spring and then again in the fall. I would guess our main bite for walleyes in the Fargo area is about over as the water temp has reached 57. The good news is the catfish are just starting and they will be around the dams, among other places, until the water temp cools in the fall.

Catfish are much more fun to catch than walleyes anyway!

Hey, I was just wondering how long the walleye bit usually lasts here in the Fargo-Moorhead area? Is it just for a couple of weeks, or can a person catch fish below the dams just about all summer long??? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

Walleyes and Northerns are biting quite regularly in the Fargo and Wahpeton areas of the Red River, mainly below the dams. A jig and minnow or twister-tail seems to catch the majority of the fish but a plain hook with a minnow is also woking.

I fished Kidder Dam down in Wahpeton on Monday April 15th. I caught a bunch of fish from Walleyes and Northerns to Suckers and Catfish and even one Smallmouth of about two pounds. The warm weather we have had has really warmed the water fast in the headwaters region.

It may take a week or so to get the water temps to raise in the Grand Forks area. I would guess the Walleyes will start biting up that way at any time soon.

Good Fishin!

I fished the North Dam in Fargo this evening. Not even a bite, a half dozen other fisherman were there also, not a fish between any of us. Fishing will get more consistant as the weather warms. Have heard good reports from fisherman fishing the North Dam, just not this evening though.

Almost all the ice is gone in the Fargo area. That is including above the dams. Boating should be more safe now.

I will try again in a couple of days. Maybe put the boat in.
