fishing has been pretty slow the last couple of weeks, except for the pike. we've caught a few ok walleyes at grano, but put alot of time into it. Haven't heard of any perch biting yet,but cameras show a few down there. travel on the ice is iffy....lots of snow!! If anyone is having luck, especially perch, post a report. thanks and good luck

Your e-mail request was forwarded to me for response. You asked the status of Hobart Lake and whether or not it was open to year round fishing. It is open to year round fishing. It is an easement refuge with the US Fish and Wildlife Service but language in the easement states that one of the purposes is to allow for fishing. I know there was some confusion in past years but it's since been discussed and dealt with. Thanks for your interest.

Fishing Report January 9, 2004

Went Ice-Fishing South West of Four Bears Casino near the "Bins" and the fish came in a little late but were consistent from about 4-7:30 P.M A few sauger, walleye ranging from about 2-5 lbs. The bite is little inconsistent due to the weather patterns but they are still able to find the bait!

Perch fishing has been great all fall here on Devils Lake. Five of us caught from 130 to 150 perch averageing 10 inches the three days before christmas. Largest weighed just over 1 1/2 lbs with quite a few between 1 and 1 1/2 lbs.

Iv'e been walleye fishing since then and it has been hit and miss. The biggest was 5 lbs and not great numbers, we kept 7 two lbers for our best outing so far.

I don't know about the rest of your river rat, but it has been s-l-o-w fish'n for me the past week?

Sloppy wet ice, spooky ice in many areas for sure, so that has limited my choices of where to try.

The very clear water may have the walleye in night bite mode? The few fish I have tracked down were in very shallow and at night. Gold flashy stuff has been best for me, then gold and glow combo's. The melt may have something to do with this shallow bite, who knows?

I'm stubborn so I'll keep hunt'n tell I find another good bite. Sounds like the big chill in on it's way in soon? That may make things interesting too? Just may push them roaming fish back into the deeper spots and make them easier to find. Lots of if's I guess?

With the cold they are forecasting it will help to firm up the sloppy ice once again anyway, so that is good.

Fished DL yesterday (12-28) and it was a real blustery day with the wind and then the snow coming down. A large group of us guys starting fishing by Skadskem's bay and didn't even get a bite nor see anything on the camera. Ice was anywhere from 12-16 inches thick with a lot of people driving off and on here. Moved over to by the casino for the walleye bite and we managed to get about 5 walleyes between 7 guys. It was a tough day on the ice but better than watching the Vikes blow it (again). Ice should be ready for travel by vehicle anywhere if we get some nice cold cold weather which is suppose to be coming.

Fishing was good this past weekend. Did well at Camp Grafton on Saturday in 21' and on South Black Tiger on Sunday in 23'. Minnows were the only thing I could get a bite on - best lures were forage minnow jigs, genz bugs (both glow with chartreuse) and a plain hook and minnow. I was driving everywhere - drove from the Black Tiger Bay boat landing all the way to South Black Tiger on the ice.

So what is the story here? Can we fish this little honey hole or not? That would definitely suck if we are not able to drive out onto these little ponds. Go figure it would take a few people to ruin it for others who respect the land.

Red_River

Hi all.

I would like to offer a word of warning on the present ice conditions on the Red River and other rivers in the region.

The ice was fairly thin to start with, and with the new snow cover and the warmer weather it is dissolving very rapidly.

I would HIGHLY recommend snowmobiles, ATV's, and other recreational equipment stay off the Rivers at this time.

Bridge and or necked down flow areas are points of very real danger. They should be completely avoided and not used as crossings for recreational vehicles or pedestrians!

The surface is very wet and slushy resulting in further dangers. This ice is extremely unpredictable and dangerous at this time.

Have a safe and joyious Holiday season!

Thanks,

Ed

Perch are on the bite. I have fished by Camp Grafton with good success and lots of other anglers are too. We did real well in Black Tiger Bay the beginning of the week. Skadsens produced some real nice size perch. Walleyes are being caught on the Minnewaukan Flats and very few anglers out there. I haven't been to the north end of six mile bay yet but have heard good reports for walleye and pike. The ice is about 12 inches thick in the bays but I have not ventured out onto any of the main bays to check the depth of the ice yet. A lot of one pound perch are being caught with a few pushing the 2 lb range. We started ice fishing the day after thanksgiving and it has been generally real good with a few poor days mixed in. They call them fronts.

If you are planning a trip and need some help give me a holler and I'll do what I can.

Well, I am not feeling so lucky now. Went out to the English Coulee whis weekend and went in from the west and the only water accessable is the west pond. THE REST IS CABLED OFF. Seems the water board closed it off because people were driving over the dike. Typical case where a few cause a problem and all get punished. Just how does one go about making a petition? Would anyone be interested in signing? Seems like if there was enough people interested, they might listen? What do you all think?
