Hunting_Talk

My son and I have been hunting in N. Dakota for the past 5 years. We hunt ducks and geese with Dan Rodriguez from Grand Forks. Each year we are amazed at the abundance of waterfowl and the lack of hunters. Rarely do we even see other hunters in the field. I'm not a rich guy who can afford to travel the U.S. and pay outlandish money to outffiters so I can be pampperd. For me I have not seen the problem of out of state hunters. So far it seems that there is plenty of game and areas to hunt. I'd also like to say that the people of North Dakota I've met have been generous and fun to hang out with. It is my hope and prayers that everything will work out for all parties involved with the issue of out of sate hunters. For my son and I hunting in North Dakota is something we talk about every week of the year. The one week we spend hunting in North Dakota is the only time we are in heaven but still on earth.

Lake_Darling

Can someone fill me in on why Lake Darling was producing no fish becuase you would think that right after ice-off, the fish would be active but it has been that way for 2 months and now the walleyes choose to bite. Did the lake suffer in some way? If anybody has any info please e-mail me at the above address.

Dave,

The tournament is one of the biggest events of the summer. There will be 150 boats moving around and it does get much tighter than normal. If you want to relax and enjoy the quiet of the river my advice would be to come the week after the tourny. This way we would have some time to visit (All of us are in the tourny) and you can get away from the boats and really enjoy what the river has to offer.

I've been reading through the archives & it looks like there's a catfish tourney in mid to late August. Does anyone know the dates for this year??

When the tourney is on, is the river jam packed with boats making it miserable to fish or is it like that every weekend??

Thanks again for the info!!

Dave, you have almost everything just perfect. The place, the time of year and your boat will be just perfect.

Cut suckers, dead frogs or cut goldeye all will work well.

Stay in touch via this website and when your trip gets closer-just ask here what is working. Also: many of us are down at the river many times a week so you are almost bound to find one of there to help you out.

Good luck!

I am planning a trip to the Red River (Grand Forks area) for mid August. I have never fished the Red before. Is this generally a decent time to catch big cats? Is there another location on the Red that anyone would suggest?

Also, I have a 14' flat-bottom john boat with a 25-horse Merc. motor. Is this sufficient, or do I need to round up a bigger boat? (Only myself & one other person will be fishing from it).

Any suggestions what-so-ever on bait, location, ect. would be greatly appreciated!! Please e-mail me at kingsleyhf@yahoo.com with any suggestions/info. Thanks guys!! Dave

Big cats are still on a rampage up on the lower Red River in Canada. Big cats and big numbers too. I suspect that end is 2 weeks off from any spawning movment back to the big lake/marsh?

Locally here in the Central Red the spawn is on, so it is S---L---O---W, very-very S-L-O-W. It will be slow yet for about 10 days, give or take a few, hard to pinpoint just yet?

Word is, the James River is seeing a good walleye bite. Some cats too, and pike.

I will not "pinpoint" where, in respect for the anglers who passed this along, but it is a good bite.

I just may wonder West and see how I can do today since the local bite is a bummer?

Actually, the Red River in the eastern portion of the State of North Dakota is one of the better catfish fisheries in the upper midwest.

Response to Bergi. I was just at lockport and caught many catfish, one at 31 inches and a 34.5 inch twenty pounder. The fishing boats were also catching alot of cats. I have fished in and about Selkirk with alot of luck using worms on a Gamagatsu hook. This seems to catch alot of species and you will undoubtably catch a Goldeye or two. I have yet to try the marsh area at the north end of Selkirk park, but I expect there will be some larger Carp in there also. last year I caught two in the low 30 pound range, they fight hard! Hope this helps.

Dale....If you're camping,I don't suggest July 5+6.The campgrounds are usually pretty full.Lots of motels tho. I'm 90 miles away, but I get there a few times each summer. This coming weekend will be the first.I prefer Minnewauken Bay,6-Mile Bay around Grahams Island statepark.Casting crankbaits along shores work.I have alot of luck with floatingjigs(greens, blue, and a touch of orange). Also, spinners or bobbers catch alot of walleye and northern.Theres a Casino on the SE corner of the main bay.So try your favorite system and good luck!

I have a trip planned for the 18th thru the 22nd of June and plan to fish the Selkirk area for cats. Should this be a good time to go, or will the cats be in a post spawn mode? I was told the marsh area located north of end of main would be a good spot. True or not? Also where or how do you get golden eyes for bait, and what kind of shrimp work the best? Thanks for any advice.

There are no prairie dogs within two hours of fargo. The nearest ones are going to be four hours away on the other side of the state. You want to go south and west of the Missouri River. A nonresident needs to purchase a nonresident nongame license to shoot ground squirrels or prairie dogs.

I will be in Fargo for a 2 weeks in June. Looking for some weekend prarie dog (or any varmint) shooting. 1) I don't expect anyone to give me a location but are there any critters in that area - for example within a 2 hr drive from Fargo? 2) I'm a ranch & farm owner so am VERY respectful to other ranchers - generally have fencing tools with me to fix any problems I see when hunting. 3) Obviously I'll check local laws for non-residents, licensing, etc. 4) Anybody I should check with to find locations? 5) I won't go around telling every shooter or posting names or locations on the internet either. 6) I am very SAFE and enjoy helping other ranchers while having some fun - I'm not one of those 500 shot/day guys - just a relaxing day shooting at a leisurely pace.

You can respond via this page or me directly. If nobody responds I understand. Thanks for any help in sending me in the right direction. -Robb Spence
