If you want to make a difference you need to have people quit littering our highways, where people see the garbage on the side of the road. You think there going to care where they dump beer cans on the banks of the river. We just have to many pigs out there, that dont care. It would be nice to have eveything looking nice and keept that way,the way it should be.

Decided to give the river another crack today. Fished for about three hours. Our group caught a nice 14 pounder and a smaller fish. A couple of other good strips. The season is really taking off as far as bigger fish go.

Stan, The key is the stinger hook for keeping your cisco or smelt horizontal. We will use a norweigen j hook with a stinger hook; hook the smelt from head to tail with the stinger holding up the tail. I found the new ice buster casting bobber works well. i place it about 4ft. under the surface; and hold on tight. I have also used the shrimp stink bait for chumming before i throw the line in. I caught a #6 pike with an arched back, does anyone know what this is?

Don,

What were you using for bait? I live near Lakota and have heard "stories" of some big fish coming out of that area....namely Blackswan itself and areas upstream. Can you be more specific on your technique? I would like to get the wife out there for a little springtime action.

Thanks

I don't think garbage cans would help out much. There already throwing it out, you think they have enough brains to walk and place it in the cans like they should. I was sick last night when I can off the river, I had to clear beer bottles off the road just so I could drive my truck around. They weren't there two hours earlier when I put the boat in. If I ever see anyone throwing beer cans bottles or any garabge at all I'll be the first to call the police, and If I have to write down plate numbers I'll do that to. Oh and we caught two small cats both about 2 1/2 to 3 lbs. Water temp 54

WEll, been out quite alot lately, and have caught my share of gold eye. But I have hooked a few good sized cats. Usually fish with boat below the north dam.

Haven't caught a walleye yet, hopefully tomarrow is the day.

Hey, I wonder if It would help with the trash if garbage cans were put in at the boat docks, I realize its not an excuse to litter (to hell with those who do), but it might help.

Boy did it feel great to get in the river for the first time this year. We fished for about three hours and only caught two fish. That was ok though because it was a nice night and I was on the river. By buddy caught the first fish of this young 2003 season. A great 16 pounder. If that is an indication of what the rest of the summer is going to bring, get ready for a great summer.

gone huntin, I am not so certain either if access with a boat is permitted or not. If you scroll down a ways, you will see a post I had made inserting a copy of an I received from Terry Steinwand(Chief fisheries division)stating that Hobart IS OPEN to year around fishing. I should check with him regarding the boat issue.

IF I'am correct, you cannot fish Hobart after Ice off. Hobart is a waterfowl refuge, which means that you cannot put a boat on the lake at all. The only time you can fish the lake is off shore or on the ice in the winter after all the waterfowl has left the area. Correct me if I'am wrong?

Kent,Scott,

We started at the North landing last night to the South of the ramp in snagville since the other side of the ramp was occupied. We soon got tired of retying lines and moved to a different spot. We went further North to where the coulee diversion dumps into the Red. Caught one 14 inch sauger and that's it.. very slow night. We did manage to build some character lifting 12 ounce weights :). We picked up about 3 bags of trash in the area before we left...Man people are slobs. Did you put the boat in today?

Dan,

Why are you only fishing on the EGF side of the river? With a MN license you can fish from either side of the river. I would try the Central Park area which is just around the corner upstream from where you have been fishing. Go to the very southern part of the park. Theres usually a cat or 2 there that are happy to chew on some sucker. You may want to downsize your weight a little? The water isnt as turbid in Central Park. Good luck. Dont give up yet its early in the year and the sumos are a bit finicky yet.

Tried the area where Red Lake river meets the Red, got nothing to speak of. Tried cut sucker and had no takers all day. Saw someone catch a nice cat, but that was about it. Does any one know any other good spots in East Grand Forks to try from shore? I've seen other people getting some very decent fish, but I have had much luck. Is there a certain rig that works better than others? I've been using a pyramid sinker in front of a swivel with a 12in. leader with a chunk of sucker. I'm from Illinois and am used to fishing for Flatheads, channel cats are a bit new to me so any info is appreciated.

You might want to wait a couple of weeks for the white bass. Last year we hit them on memorial day weekend and must have caught 300 between the two of us in 3 ft of water. And in the past it seemed like its been the same thing, catch a few and then that weekend seems like we hammer them. Just look for some of the warmer water with rocks and they should be their.

Hey Kent,

They are begining to move around more and more as the days go by and the water warms. Caught my biggest one so far this year from shore at the North landing on Wednesday evening at or around 10 pounds. The bite seems to be better mid to late afternoon right now even into the early evening. As soon as the sun goes down and the air temp drops the bite comes to a hault. I havent hooked into any real hogs yet but i will be shore fishing again tonight with some friends to see if we can get into one. Tomorrow I will be launching South for a day with the kiddies and hopefully some piggies providing the water level allows us to launch South, if not i will be going North also. Lots of 3-6lb fish has been the norm. Im sure the big dogs arn't far behind. Its definintely worth getting the boat out there and shake the rust off of tackling the strong fish of the Red.

Marty,

Good job on not only picking up after some slobs, but showing your kids the real path to being outdoorsmen (and outdoorgals). Hope you find lots of fish in return for your good deed. Calling those people who leave that crap fisherman is a lot like calling poachers hunters. If you litter like a few people who fish do, you're not a fisherman, just a slob.

Kent, the cats are just starting to get going down here. I was out the other day and did well- lots of fun. I'll be up in your neck of the woods tomorrow, but it looks like I won't have time to fish- we're showing up late tonight, then leaving tomorrow evening with work inbetween. I'll definitely be calling you this summer for a trip or two out on the Red in G.F. Scoot

Too true Eddy. Yesterday, I took my kids fishing on the Red River in Grand Forks. Quite a mess there, my 6 year old daughter finally said to me we should pick up the litter so we did in a 50 yard stretch we were at. Kind of discouraging to see this activity, a person tries to get a way for a peaceful afternoon of fishing and are forced to look at trash. I hate to think these people are fishermen (I am sure not all of the garbage comes from them)but some of it has come from fishermen. Why do people abuse something that brings them so much pleasure?

Thanks for the reply Jeff. I tried sucker today, you weren't kidding about using a heavy line. It took quite a few hours to get a taker, but when I got one it was big (about 10lbs.). Once I got it near shore I tried to loosen the drag, and accidently tightened it right when the fish made a hard run, the line snapped, DOH! But at least I know what works for the better cats. Also saw someone get a nice pike on what looked like a rapala.

Dan Over the years I've tried diff.(legal)cutbaits.The goldeye is suppose to be a channelcats favorite. They are silver;scales.I've got a few this spring, mostly about 5x10"and 2-3"thick.They look like a skipjack;except those Bright GoldishYellow eyes. This cutbait, and cut-suckers and of course frogs or shrimp(uncooked)are by far the most popular on the red,for the bigger fish.I guess it's just the most natural, and common food for them. The shrimp..well,maybe it's just the smell(they are really popular up around Drayton). So,use heavy line, have fun and Good Luck.

Two questions; first I've been fishing where Red Lake River meets the Red River in East Grand Forks for the past few days and have seen quite a few nice cats caught. I've only been able to get one to two pound fish, and countless drum. I've been using mostly nightcrawlers, most of the big fish I've seen came on cutbait. So today I tried using some cut drum, but nothing but larger drum, lots of bites (not many takers), and a northern (which I lost at shore). Does it make a difference what kind of cutbait is used? I hear sucker is best, but it seems like cut up fish is cut up fish, and species is a minor detail. My other question is what is a Goldeneye? Are they those white, sort of shad like things?

Brad when are you planning on coming up this way. Fishing by the dams is a great place if your not bring a boat. This year might be evern better since the river wasn't high enough to let the fish pass during the spawn run. Fish should be stacked up under them. As far a north, I have never fished more the ten miles north out of Grand Forks so I can't tell you much about that area.

I agree that the resorts and bait shops will always tell you the fish are biting. i will also tell you that in each of the past three years my best fishing on that lake has been in early to mid june. My personal no hassle plan in is to find an nice drop off near some trees in 6-12 feet of water throw out a slip bobber with a leach and vertical jig with a leach at the same time.

Jeremy,

The dates that you said are probably a couple of the best days on Devils Lake. You should be able to find fish almost anyplace you go. You can jig, cast cranks in the shallows, or even use slip bobbers in the trees. Just get a fishing report from a resort or bait shop when you get there and have fun because the fish should be ready to bite.

Brad Kvanbek, I'm not to sure what your looking for. If you looking for a great place to fish and camp on privite land I can't help you. What you can do is call the East Grand Forks Chamber (218-773-7481) and they should be able to help. If your looking for rural land you might be able to ask a home owner along the river and they might let you camp along the river but you won't know if it would be good fishing there or not. Camp in town and fish both damns. Hope that helps.

SLOBS BEWARE!

Ya know what? I am getting darn sick of picking up after others. I have picked up truck loads over the past years.

So, my plan is to make the individuals responsible for the trash and waist accountable for their own actions.

They can pick it up, or deal with the circumstances of their actions. Simple as that, be accountable.

I applaud folks who do regularly pick up after SLOBS, your efforts to show stewardship of out great outdoors is highly commendable, more should do so.

Yet I feel when you see SLOBS in action.

Try this once, with a garbage bag in one hand and a cell phone in the other ask them this. "You can pick it up and dispose of it properly, or I will call the TIPS LINE and have a warden describe to you exactly how trash should be handled, your choice?"

Vandalism is another deal, call TIPS and gather info for them to fallow up on. Vehicle make, plate number, descriptions, and if handy a photo or two.

More sportsman need to be pro-active and less passive about littering, vandalism, and waist.

SLOBS will get the point faster that way.
