Mike, For the time being it looks like we will have cool weather for the next week or so. If that holds, then I would expect our moderate ice thickness to be fine for the 14th-19th. We don't have an over abundant thickness of ice, so keep an eye on the weather. If the temps start getting back up into the mid-high 40's again, the ice conditions near shore could change quickly.

Kyle, That's a question fishermen have been asking since they outlawed dynamite and crank phones for bait. I went to DL on Sunday to brave the cold front. Started about 2:30 in the city of people near East Bay campground looking for perch. Little buggers would come up and look at it, but were very hesitant to take anything I was offering. Headed for 12-15 ft of water near trees for the evening walleye bite and the cold front appeared to keep them under control as well. Ended up with 1 perch and 1 nice walleye. Did bring up the biggest snag of my ice fishing career though. It was a branch about 3.5 ft long and about 2.5 inches in diameter. Not bad on 6 lb test. Had something take one of my lines down so far I even lost the bobber when I set the hook into a snag. Wouldn't have bothered me so much except it was one of those overly expensive styrofoam jobs.

Fished Devils Lake 4 days last week. Found a nice walleye hole. Not a soul within a mile. Buddy and I were fishing 50 feet apart. Along comes a guide in a blue Dodge pick-up with dealer plates with 4 vehicles following him and drives right between us. They all park to fish. others see all the vehicles . Its no longer a nice walleye hole.

We fished the north end of Grams island on Sunday and did ok. We caught about 15 walleys in about 12-16FT of water of the point. The bite kick in around 4:00 oclock. We caught a few in the afternoon.

Went to DL on Sunday. Walleye fishing was way better than the perch fishing. Could get the perch to come up and look, but getting them to bite was another story. The few we did catch were 10+ inches and spread from 6 mile bay to Woods Rutten road. The evening walleye bite on Black Tiger was excellent. Saw what may have once been a nice fishhouse bobbing in the water east of Highway 57 bridge. Me thinks the ice is gonna be unsafe in another week or two if these temps keep getting up into the 40's. The ice was not exactly what I would call crisp.

I fished the sunken road on Black Tiger Bay on Friday 02/15 with good success. Caught more perch in the afternoon than morning. Took home 6 perch between 9-10" and 3 small walleyes around 13-14". Threw back a couple of smaller perch an about 10 walleyes under 11". I had the same results there with walleyes about 2 weeks ago. Considering how few perch I've caught at DL, it was a good day.

Coldy, I am not sure... No one that I know has been, although I have heard there are some guys spearing on the north end of Six-mile Bay.

Mike, Has anyone been spearing up there? Dry-Goose, West lake, and Cold water are murky. Flood is clear, but it is extremely slow.

I have fished the morning hours (5:30am to 8:30am) and the walleye bite has been good in about 8-17 ft. The evening hours hasn't been as great. (5pm to 8pm)

I have mainly been fishing East bay from haybale bay to the dairy farm.

Is nighttime fishing any good on devil's lake? Didn't head out there this weekend because everyone i talked to said that no one was catching anything. Fished by the casino a few days ago catching only two small perch. Has it picked up at all?

Jesse, You don't need to rent a camera if you are using a Vexilar. The perch are hanging in tight small packs right on the bottom. The trick is to keep punching holes, fish it for 10-15 minutes see if the fish are their and then move. They have been in about 30-40 feet of water during the day. It's been tough finding larger schools of fish but with a little patients and some moving around you can pick up a few. Dan

Just to let everyone know... the state opened Shelvers Grove state park, for access to the lake for winter. So anyone fishing eastbay, can get on the lake right off hwy 2. the reason for this is that too many non-residents are using the Cliffs Subdivision access. The cliffs is a private access and the DL Lake Access Committee asked the state to open Shelvers Grove.

and all were caught on either a gold genz w/small minnow, or a chartreuse hook w/small minnow (more active the better). Copper Hali with waxworm drew no interest.

Went to DL on Sunday. Got there about 10:00 and starting at Woods Rutten road, I drilled 15 holes from there towards Black Tiger Bay. Didn't find any active schools of perch and noticed an awful lot of other people doing the same thing (picking up and moving around). Talked to a friend at Black Tiger who also wasn't having any significant luck, so I tripped on over to the Towers. Set up in 36 ft of water and found nothing, picked up again and moved to the Casino and set up in 40+ feet of water at about 2:00. Caught 6 perch between 2 and 4:00, then nothing until dark. Perch were all between 9.5 and 11.5 inches.

Hi all. I am planning a trip out to DL the third weekend in Feb. with some friends. None of us have ever been to DL so any tips would be greatly appreciated. I have thought about renting a underwater camera system, does this help? We will have a vexilar also, but I was told by a friend (that was out there last year) that the camera was a big help also to find the schools of perch?? Any info would be great!! Thanks and Good Luck fishing!!

Anybody hitting any Northerns at Devils Lake? Let me know.

Hit DL on Saturday and Monday over the long MLK weekend. Saturday I fished alone just south of the town of DL across from Camp Grafton in East Bay. Caught about 15 perch and 2 walleye in 8 hrs, lost 2 big fish to break offs in early morning (northerns??). Ended up keeping 8 medium perch and the two small walleye. Fished in 15-19ft of water and had the best luck on a plain hook with a small minnow, although I did catch 3-4 perch on a wax worm (one was an entire 3.5 inches)and the walleye came off a gold genz and minnow. Went back to the same spot on Monday and caught one 6 inch perch 10 minutes after being there, then spent until noon drilling holes all along the northern shore of East Bay with no success. Noticed that the shrimp appeared to be very voracious this time of year. If my minnow got anywhere near bottom, he would come up with 4-8 shrimp atached to his gills and eyes. Called it quits and stopped off at Stump where nothing exciting appeared to be happening either.

Well I made my weekly pilgrimage to Devils Lake. Black Tiger Bay was the spot.

We started the day at about 7:15am. We set up right off the boat ramp at BTB. The walleye bite was nice. We caught about 10 and kept 3. We could have kept a couple more but decided that we wanted to wait for bigger fish.

After the morning flurry of walleyes we move out to about 36' and began the day of perch fishing. It was the best perch day of the season for me at BTB. We ended up keeping 19 perch between the two of us. Jigs with wax worms worked, but the best was a small Genz Worm tipped with a very small active minnow. We would set it up about 5 inches from the bottom with a slip bobber.

After the perch fun we moved back up to the spot from the morning for the evening Walleye bite and managed to do almost the same as the morning. Ended up with 3 walleyes each. I am convinced that without a Vexilar we would not have been able to catch the walleyes. You really had to work them.
