One of the best places I have found for frogs this time of year is around the rest area on Hwy. 2 just before Fisher. Just walk the grass along the edge of the water. Bring a frog net along they really help.

And the MAYHEM continues! Well this appears to be the case judging the way the two Brad's and Jason tore into them recently...way to go guy's! How did the second leg of your trip pan out? I know the sturgeon effort was slow and its apparent they have shifted down into their summer huants. They are still very accessible you just have to locate them. Did you enjoy good success up river? The scenery up the Winnipeg is pretty special isn't it!

Canuck,

I will say the answer to your question is YES!! If I could come back up today I would. I have had some great action up there but this past weekend took the cake.

There were three guys with two days to fish. The total for the two days was 77 cats landed and 12 lost. We had 30 cats the first day and 48 the second with 38 of those coming in just over four hours. Only two of the 77 were under 30" and the largest was 37.5 inches and weighed in at just over 32 pounds.

I also should mention that the folks at Cats on the Red were fabulas as always and it made for another great experience. If anyone hasn't experienced the lower Red I suggest you go there. IT'S AMAZING!!!

So to answer your question again. Ya I would come back. NO QUESTION.

Was out at Lockport on Saturday. Fished from shore on the east side. If it were possible to get bored catching fish, I would have been bored. The goldeyes were hungry on every cast and the cats seemed to just be waiting for me to cut them up and throw them out to them. Also the carp action was amazing. If I went 5 minutes without a fish on the line, it was thought to be getting slow. Will head out again this evening in hopes of another great day on the banks of the Red. Til next time, good fishin!!!

Hey Breezie........sounds like you had a great time on the Red in Lockport! Were you fishing from a boat or from shore? How long was the sturgeon? One interesting aspect about the Red, because of the great varity of species and shear numbers of fish, some level of angling success is almost guaranteed! This makes it an ideal venue for both the novice (especially children) and the seasoned veteran as well. There's nothing worse than taking a child fishing on a venue that requires a lot of skill to catch a few fish, their attention spans are short aren't they!

Hi there....

Did some fishing at lockport the last couple of weeks. My 12 year old daughter pulled in a smaller Sturgeon. Wow! We were surprised. It seems like everytime we put our line out we were getting fish. Whether it be those small catfishy types or like I said my daughter pulled in. Just a darn good time had by all. Try it!!!!!

WATER LEVELS?

Can anyone give us any indication on how high the Red has risen due too the rain she's received south of the border? Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Headed up north for a couple hours last Sunday night. Picked up many small fish along sharp breaks where it went from about two to 15 feet. Also had luck early in really shallow water around eddys. Didn't do much in snags or deep holes.

The lower Red continues to produce, not only numbers but big fish as well! The reason she's been so productive this year is exsessive waters flows. Lockport becomes a smorg for a multitude of birds and fish under these conditions. For example there is no less than two hundred pelicans at any one time here on the river and we all know they need a lot of fish to sustain themselves. So why does increased flow rates make this portion of the Red so productive? It's simple exsessive flows attract higher volumns of fish in off Lake Winnipeg, from the emerald shiner to the mighty catfish it's all part of the cycle.

In my opinion 2004 has to be considered as one of the best years on record and I think it's safe that many would agree with me!

I took my wife out on the river last night just to drive around and catch some goldeyes for bait. What a great night just to be outside and on the river. Sitting in one spot we watched a doe and her new fawn just being deer and didn't even care that we were there. Watched the carp eating cotton that fell from the trees. Besides the great fishing in the Red there is so much more to see and do on a beautiful evening in July.

Underwater hazzard. For those running out of the North Boat ramp there is a snag just around the first bend in the river. The hazzard in between the center snag and the ND bank. There is nothing showing on the water surface to warm you about it either. I will now be running between the snag and the MN bank. With water starting to get lower Caution should be used even more.

Fishing report: Monday fishing was still slow four hours of fishing got us two cats, 4 and 6 lbs. They were the only bites we had. Should be getting better soon.
